While you’re spending time with your friends and family this weekend, take some time to think up a few New Years Resolutions. Maybe you’d like to appriciate your surroundings more, clean out your closet or wear your fur coat more often (a great excuse to get dressed up and go out on the town).

Distinctive Looks from Belle Fare

Real Fur is Eco-Friendly

The debate over real versus faux fur has been going on for decades, although real fur has been around for centuries. The Fur Council of Canada provides us with some great resources to learn about the eco-friendly practices of the fur industry. Fur, leather and shearling are natural, unlike synthetic products which are typically petroleum based.

According to the Fur Council of Canada, “Fur is a natural, renewable and sustainable resource. That means we only use part of what nature produces each year without depleting wildlife populations or damage the natural habitats that sustain them. In nature, each plant and animal species generally produces more offspring than the land can support to maturity. Like other species, we live by making use of part of this surplus that nature creates. We also have a responsibility to protect the wilderness areas that provide these valuable resources. Modern conservationists define this as the “sustainable use” of renewable resources.”

The Council also tells us that synthetic materials like those used in many faux fur products are “generally made from petroleum (a non-renewable resource), which is NOT consistent with the sustainable use of our environment. The production, transportation and disposal of petrochemicals can cause environmental problems.”

In addition to these points, real fur is an organic material and biodegradable. It is also extremely durable and can also be recycled and restyled into new pieces to fit the current trends or your lifestyle.

The Fur Council of Canada also has a lot of information on their website about responsible practices in the fur trade surrounding animal welfare. Be an educated consumer and you’ll be able to enjoy your real fur for years to come, guilt free!

The Fur Vest

The fur vest is a must have style item this year. Celebrities from Rachel Bilson to Olivia Palermo and the Olsen sisters have been spotted wearing fur vests for day time and evening looks. Celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe started wearing this trend early and has been a long time supporter of fur, leather and shearling.

The website WhoWhatWear asked Ms. Zoe for her tips on wearing a fur vest, she gave the following advice for work wear, evening and casual looks.

“If you want to work a faux fur vest in the office, I recommend throwing it on over a classic printed shirtdress with sweater tights and closed-toe pumps to tie it all together. This ensemble is professional yet fashion-forward at the same time and ultimately the perfect winter look for anyone working in a creative field.

Taking the trend into evening, give your go-to LBDs a rest and pair your vest with a silk blouse, tux pants—one of my favorite fall pieces—and ankle booties. The outcome will be very Parisian chic with a touch of ’70s flare—a totally unexpected and cool outfit for night.

For a casual daytime or weekend look, my instinct is to team a faux fur vest with a long sleeve knit sweater, skinny jeans and leather riding boots. Add a fetching necklace to glam it up and you are set.”

Trends: The Fur Chubby

How to Wear Fur this Fall

We were checking out the blog Million Looks and came across a great post on how to wear fur for Fall 2011. There were so many great trends on the runway to take advantage of including 1960s and 1970s looks. This is a great wear to have some fun with your wardrobe and work in some of your favorite fur items, or purchase a new fur accessory to get the look!
